You cannot damage the digital box by anything you do with the remote control or the keyboard. If it stops or ‘freezes’ simply turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.

The box has lots of features which you can experiment with over time. Here we are going to look at the basics of TV and the Internet - just to get you going quickly.

Digital TV
Switch the box on using the small switch at the back. You may also have to press the TV key on the Keyboard or the red power  button at  the very bottom of the remote control.

When the box is on it will display its own screen and automatically 'take over' from your normal TV.

Remote control
Using your remote is very similar to any other TV remote.

If you can already use a TV remote control, then, you can use this one!
You can either type in the channel numbers or use the 'P' button on the right hand side to move up and down. The 'V' button on the left controls the TV volume.

Note: you still need to have the TV volume turned up using your normal TV remote.
With the digital box you should receive extra TV channels.

Not all channels are available in all areas. If the channel is not available you will see a 'bad signal' message at the bottom of the screen. Don’t worry about it: simply move on to another channel.

If you want to see 'What's On TV', press the brown Menu button right above the red power button.

The small circular  brown info button gives you information about the channel you are watching. Press it again to make the information box go away.

Using the Keyboard to control the TV
You might find it easier to use the keyboard for your TV as well.

Press the TV button on the top right of the keyboard. You can either type in a channel number, or move up and down channels by using the P+ and P- keys on the far right hand side of the keyboard.

Pressing List gives you a list of channels which you can move up and down by using the arrow keys.

The Volume – and Volume +  keys are on the bottom left of the keyboard along with a Mute button if you want to talk on the phone.

When you press the volume you will see the yellow volume bar on the left hand side of the picture. Press Mute and the bar will change colour to red and a red cross will appear at the top of the bar.

Text
The small circular brown text button on the remote control gives you access to Text. This is similar to the ‘Teletext’ you have probably already used.

Radio
The top channel numbers of the Digital Box provide you with many radio channels. Apart from the usual ones there are also many digital only stations.

Internet

You can try and use the remote for email and the Internet, but you will find it much easier to use the Keyboard.
Look at the buttons at the top of the keyboard.

If you want to know about the weather press News and Weather. This will give you Top Stories, Weather Info, The Guardian, and News Photos.

Use the arrow keys at the bottom right of the keyboard to highlight the one you want. Press OK.

To go back press the Back Space key.

All of the other special buttons: Kids & Teens, Shop etc. work in the same way.

If you want to try out the Internet press Web.  Now you have a choice.

If you know the web address, then, type it in the top bar. For example, www.bbc.co.uk will take you to the BBC website.

If you want to look at something more generally: press the down arrow key until the bottom bar has the purple border around it.

Then put in your Search words.   If you get too many Results, add more words.

For example, Hairdressers in Nottingham gives around 33,000 results.  Far too many to be of any use.

It would suggest that there is one hairdresser to every ten people!

Hairdressers in Radford Nottingham gives 259 Results.

Scroll down the first ten Results and you will see Hairdressers in Radford.

Some will be repeated and some will only be there because they have paid to be top of whatever list you typed in.

Don't worry. Just carry on with the next ten Results until you get what you are really looking for.

Remember, anytime  you want to go back - press the
Back Space key

Electronic Mail – Email

This is very easy to use and will allow you to write to anyone who has an email address.

Whoever sets up your digital box will set up your personal email account and show you how to use it.
